Three more 94/95 rips to kick off June with. Two amen-heavy records from the labels Renk and Jungle Massive, with funk, ragga and atmospheric influences, and one of the few non-amen releases I enjoy from A Guy Called Gerald's label, Juice Box. For those who enjoy the Dubtronix tunes, check out B9 recordings for more of their work. There was only one other release on Jungle Massive, and it's a damn fine slice of jungle worth hunting down too.

I think also think that these numbers are unrealistic....its probably more towards the thousands. I know of at least 15 people that have downloaded these mp3s around the begining of this year, and of 3 that have played them via Serato in their live DJ sets, and this is in my small city of only a few hundred thousand. And yep, Ive downloaded a few of the tracks and enjoyed them very much, but I would never ever play them in a set, and the only CDs I have ever played in a Jungle set since 96 have been my own material or some random Hiphop track to kick the set off.
The more people download, share and play pirated mp3s/wavs of varying quality, the more diluted the sound quality will become which in turn will eventually make the type of sound people come to expect from a performance, to be of a standard that does not represent the full dynamic/sub sonic form of the original material. Though I guess more and more electronic music being released these days is sounding so completely awashed in a dull digitized sound that it probably wont matter in the years to come.
Dont get me wrong, I believe that to restrict the flow of creativity, information and discovery is not conjusive to a healthy society, but there has to be balance to the equation, which at the moment there currently is not.
Anyways, on a side note thankyou very much for taking the time for the rips. Really feel'n some of the Quayside/Kickin stuff that Id never heard of before. Keep up the good work!
Peace

Back with another steinful of jungle from Krautland, this time we head up to Hamburg for a 1996 LP written by the duo Green Piece, which consists of Malte "Waldmeista" Moller and Pari "K.U. Hetsch" Dee, appearing on the Label Kiff, which was active from 1994-2000 and tended to cater more toward the downtempo side of electronic music with releases in such genres as dub, electro, ambient, techno, synth-pop and breaks. The songs range from intelligent, lushly padded, Bukem style tunes to melodic, female vocal, amen-driven rollers. I wouldn't rate every tune very highly on a scale of memorability, but the few standout songs – "B Alone," "R.O.L. Part 1 + 2" and "TUC Mowth" – warrant being dropped in a mix every now and again, and render the rest of the album worth at least an occasional listen. Based on the sampling and the use of breaks atypical to most jungle, I'd say the producers were influenced by the acid and techno scenes present in their day, and that they were aiming at a production style crisscrossing but markedly divergent from that of their British counterparts. After listening through a third time, I'm left with the feeling of looking down a corridor that jungle might have travelled were its trail not fated to have gone cold after the first few footsteps toward a trend that might have been. Still, at least we're left with a dozen choice fossils to admire, and scant as it may seem, there's something to be said for that.

In case anyone's noticed, the "vinyl" rips have been lacking for quite a while a now, mostly because I've been struck by various technological woes at home: I spilled a beer on my primary turntable and it seems doomed to a state of perpetual stupor. Then my desktop died a long overdue death. And when I finally got a comp from the closet running, one of my backup turntable's channels lost its voice. That aside, we're back in business now with a new laptop, an Audio Technica pre-amp and Roland's Cakewalk audio interface, so expect an onslaught of rips to ensue and the sound quality to have drastically improved.
The title of this post refers to the end of my stint on short-term disability. Unfortunately my body's not seeing its best of times and I'm up to about 10 herniated discs and counting. A couple trips to the ER and a series of spikes in pain levels weren't so fun, but a month's worth of workless rest did me good, and so on my last Saturday as a good-for-nothing, I thought I'd give this old donkey of a blog a poke.

I've decided to preserve my entire collection in digital format, so going forward this blog will mirror the developments of that project. I'll be doing full rips rather than just my favourite tunes, and will venture into territory you might not expect from what I've uploaded thus far. I'll also be re-ripping everything previously upped in an attempt to standardize sound quality. I'll stick to 320s on here, but if any particular tune or record makes your ginie tingle, send me a creatively worded request and I just might be persuaded to hand over the wavs.
For now, we have two new skool ragga bangers from the early days of the revival, the first featuring Cali don R.A.W., and the second featuring Florida funkmeister Jeffee (working under the pseudonym F3). Then we have New York's Datcyde shredding the matrix with Oh Gosh, and oh do I not jest when I say it gushes proper. Then a couple of my favorite old skool joints: Brothers by Fourth World on Ignition Musik and the elusive “Night Moves” on Jungle Splash.
I have a mint condition double of the F3 tune and am open to offers if anyone's black crack habit says they have to have it.
Lastly, if you have any really rare or obscure jungle you think I might like to hear, please let me know, I love to partake of rip-fest exchanges.
