VA - Smart Beats Vol. 1 (X-Sight 73016-2)
Next up, we have an obscure U.S. jungle compilation from the year when jungle was writhing under the excruciating agony of minimal, techy drum n bass: 1997. Despite the unfortunate year of its release, this is, to draw from its title, a rather "smart" collection of tunes from U.S. producers, most of which (perhaps all) resided in New York. There is a bit of the blechy influence on the tunes from High Jinx, Money Grip, Toxic 220 and Tom Grim/Gruv 42, but the three artists that most listeners are probably familiar with --Odi, Datcyde and Soul Slinger-- are clearly at the top of their game here, and the first two take us not only out of the garbage, but into some of best examples of amen-oriented, monster-bass tunes ever to come out of the Stars and Stripes. In particular, Odi and Datcyde are trading punch for punch, and following the bout, I'd be hard pressed to declare a clear winner. After the heavy hitting, Soul Slinger slows it down with some outerdelic trip-hop a la DJ Wally. Most of the unknown guys don't appear to have done much; Toxic 220 has a single release on the Sugar Spliff label, and Gruv 42 has a few trance/breaks releases for the label Don't Panic, but other than that I don't find any mention of them on discogs. Whatever the case, it makes me wonder what else the New York Dons did in this vein that never saw the dark of vinyl, and prompts me to add my list of mixes to make an Odi vs Datcyde mix, and just like this, that's gonna be one tough cookie to crumble.

Dubtronix - Interfaze LP - Q Dance (QRLP003)
Pumping some life-blood back into this sleeping beauty, today we have one of the lesser known albums by the duo Dubtronix, which, according to discogs, consists on this outing of the producers G.E. Real and Ninj. That leads me into a bit of confusion, because Dubtronix, from what I can gather, is generally composed of Jeremy Sylvester, aka Darkus, and his father, Charles Sylvester, who had his heyday in the mid-70s as part of the disco-funk band J.A.L.N, and who I would take a stab at pinning down as Ninj (this would explain Ninj's experimental jungle album with jazz guitarist Derek Bailey and his work with avant-bassist Bill Laswell).
It could very well be that G.E. Real and Darkus are in fact J. Sylvester, but until I come across some confirmation, I'm hesitant to believe it, for one because Sub Assertive Sounds #2 (CUE2) lists Darkus, GE Real and Ninj as three separate people, as does the first track on Dubtronix - The Extreme Collection, Vol 1.
What I think more likely is that, as track AA2 seems to indicate, this is Darkus and Ninj, the only father and son duo I'm aware of in the oldskool jungle world, though I do recall several oldskool producers whose fathers were musicians and influenced their children to flex their own gift of the ear in turn.
Anyhow, some floaters on here, as well as some amen smashers, but whichever side of the fence you tend to play on, there's well-executed examples of each. My pick: Contradiction, an amen-heavy, piano-riffing, stab-slick slice of 94 jungle the way it was meant to be heard.

Tykal's Vinyl Rips – February 28th, 2010
I've decided to preserve my entire collection in digital format, so going forward this blog will mirror the developments of that project. I'll be doing full rips rather than just my favourite tunes, and will venture into territory you might not expect from what I've uploaded thus far. I'll also be re-ripping everything previously upped in an attempt to standardize sound quality. I'll stick to 320s on here, but if any particular tune or record makes your ginie tingle, send me a creatively worded request and I just might be persuaded to hand over the wavs.
For now, we have two new skool ragga bangers from the early days of the revival, the first featuring Cali don R.A.W., and the second featuring Florida funkmeister Jeffee (working under the pseudonym F3). Then we have New York's Datcyde shredding the matrix with Oh Gosh, and oh do I not jest when I say it gushes proper. Then a couple of my favorite old skool joints: Brothers by Fourth World on Ignition Musik and the elusive “Night Moves” on Jungle Splash.
I have a mint condition double of the F3 tune and am open to offers if anyone's black crack habit says they have to have it.
Lastly, if you have any really rare or obscure jungle you think I might like to hear, please let me know, I love to partake of rip-fest exchanges.

The End of An Era
In case anyone's noticed, the "vinyl" rips have been lacking for quite a while a now, mostly because I've been struck by various technological woes at home: I spilled a beer on my primary turntable and it seems doomed to a state of perpetual stupor. Then my desktop died a long overdue death. And when I finally got a comp from the closet running, one of my backup turntable's channels lost its voice. That aside, we're back in business now with a new laptop, an Audio Technica pre-amp and Roland's Cakewalk audio interface, so expect an onslaught of rips to ensue and the sound quality to have drastically improved.
The title of this post refers to the end of my stint on short-term disability. Unfortunately my body's not seeing its best of times and I'm up to about 10 herniated discs and counting. A couple trips to the ER and a series of spikes in pain levels weren't so fun, but a month's worth of workless rest did me good, and so on my last Saturday as a good-for-nothing, I thought I'd give this old donkey of a blog a poke.

Green Piece - Northern Herbalism - Kiff 003 CD (1996)
Back with another steinful of jungle from Krautland, this time we head up to Hamburg for a 1996 LP written by the duo Green Piece, which consists of Malte "Waldmeista" Moller and Pari "K.U. Hetsch" Dee, appearing on the Label Kiff, which was active from 1994-2000 and tended to cater more toward the downtempo side of electronic music with releases in such genres as dub, electro, ambient, techno, synth-pop and breaks. The songs range from intelligent, lushly padded, Bukem style tunes to melodic, female vocal, amen-driven rollers. I wouldn't rate every tune very highly on a scale of memorability, but the few standout songs – "B Alone," "R.O.L. Part 1 + 2" and "TUC Mowth" – warrant being dropped in a mix every now and again, and render the rest of the album worth at least an occasional listen. Based on the sampling and the use of breaks atypical to most jungle, I'd say the producers were influenced by the acid and techno scenes present in their day, and that they were aiming at a production style crisscrossing but markedly divergent from that of their British counterparts. After listening through a third time, I'm left with the feeling of looking down a corridor that jungle might have travelled were its trail not fated to have gone cold after the first few footsteps toward a trend that might have been. Still, at least we're left with a dozen choice fossils to admire, and scant as it may seem, there's something to be said for that.

TVR - June 1st 2009
Three more 94/95 rips to kick off June with. Two amen-heavy records from the labels Renk and Jungle Massive, with funk, ragga and atmospheric influences, and one of the few non-amen releases I enjoy from A Guy Called Gerald's label, Juice Box. For those who enjoy the Dubtronix tunes, check out B9 recordings for more of their work. There was only one other release on Jungle Massive, and it's a damn fine slice of jungle worth hunting down too.

Tykal's end of May rip-fest: I've been bitten by the bug, in more ways than one. The first being that I have one nasty case of the flu, the two week plus variety, which may or may not come from the snout of swine. The second, and more beneficial to you, being an itch to rip a few records for hour or so after work a couple days per week. Excepting the first tune, all full rips at 320 to help you blast yourself through the sweltering heat of summer.

Tykal's Vinyl Rips - April 8th, 2009
As promised, another batch fresh from the ether. For this one I picked records I wanted to do full rips of (except the mephisto odyssey record). Part 1 includes a rare 95 jungle record with ragga and atmospheric influences, and one of the few dnb records I love to pieces. If anyone has Marineville's Redpath House album and could hook me up, I'd really appreciate it. Part 2 includes an early US jungle tune on a mostly triphop label, and my favorite Bay B Kane release recorded under his alias Rinca. Part 3 heads underground for some Simon Templa of Road Busters fame and Timmi Magic from the Armshouse Crew.

Part 1
<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?ny3la1tzdaf" target="_blank">http://www.mediafire.com/?ny3la1tzdaf</a>
In the latest installment from my dust-caked shelves, we start with a 97 german ragga tune that kicks off with a bong rip, then we move into 98 with a very strange experimental french jungle tune made in honor of the crisis in kosovo, then we have ms. nikki c with some 95 hiphop amen ruffness, then my favorite secret squirrel tune which is one hell of atmospheric unfurling, then a groovy 92 hardcore ragga tune by sector 5, then a little more atmospheric 96 jungle to round out part one. don't let the later years deceive you - the amen was alive and well even then.

~
Time for another round from my vaults. First up, two of my favorite ragga tunes, 19 Funky 5 on the label Sub & Bleep, and Party AK47 by G-Flex & the Bandit on SOUR, a tune which is largely responsible for me becoming as interested as I am in jungle today. For years it was my favorite jungle tune, and had I never heard T-Power's Amber, it probably still would be. Then we have another full rip from the label Goops which produced three very solid dirty style jungle eps. Bit of rare groove sampled in there too. I wouldn't mind hearing a mix of all three releases start to finish if anyone is so inclined. After that we have Justice's Touch Me, a nice lil diva jungle tune from Flavour Tracks. Then, speaking of diva jungle, we have, in my personal opinion, the finest remix of NRG's infamous Need Your Lovin, this one gutted and put back together by new skool talent Operator. Scoot backwards about 10 years, but stay on the left side of the pond, and we have another US jungle showcase, this time Jamie Myerson under the pseudonym PEP with a floater and an atmospheric amen choon worked up for UK label Quayside. Return to Flavour Tracks, another label with three solid releases (I would guess run by Justice), with two mixes of Sy-Uss & Reality's Tribal Instinct. Then, to end the aural orgasm, we have two very special items on the dessert menu: my preferred version of Ibiza records 50 (there were two different records released under this catalogue number), this one stamped Mirror Mirror on the label, and an ode to all the pirate radio badmen from the dutty London underground, a tune every self-respecting junglist should have in their library of vinyl, Pirates on the label Metamorphosis. 14 tunes to warm your ears from a cold February New York City Friday. Hope you enjoy.

Tykal's Vinyl Rips - May 11, 2008

few new ones for ya, more soon:
take a typical aphrodite 95 banger, a 92 ragga tinged hardcore tune, 3 so-good-it-makes-me-drool remixes of eleanor rigby that took me 5 years to find, megashira flexing the perfect juxtaposition of manic & mellow on mental strength, arguably special k's best tune in deep in space, & a 93 US hardcore song i found for 50 cents one particularly sweaty afternoon of crate digging, mix it all together, rinse & repeat, & you have the latest offering from my personal vaults. enjoy. & if not, keep it to yourself, i don't really care. or better yet, go rip me something kool in return.

Tykal's Vinyl Rips - March 2, 2008
figured y'all are well overdue for some new rips. an eclectic selection this time, spanning 93-98, a couple more mellow than my usual fare (universal egg makes some interesting dnb, & for those who know how much I hate dnb, that's saying a lot) (the first & second half of the hyper tune might as well be two different songs), some of my usual amen jungle, a tune by Coma that would be at home among any Squarepusher selection, a nice little number with mr. blue flowers, a couple requests, even a hardcore tune for my boys at b2vos. plenty of flute samples for the flute lover in you (something i think jungle could use more of). round it out with a mammoth offering i recently found by someone called Drazen & three jams from jungle the extreme collection vol 3 on b9 records & i think you're in for a treat.
(by the way, all previous uploads are still available)

more 94-96 amen mania for now, a bit ruder on the basslines than before, & some female vocal tunes ruff enough to make most ragga run home with its tail between its legs. enjoy. ;-)
also, if anyone has the Plutonik - Prime Numbers album they could hook me up
with, it'd be most appreciated. <a href="http://www.discogs.com/release/593575" target="_blank">http://www.discogs.com/release/593575</a>

oh also, the correct name of Mind_Therapy_What_oes_Around is It_Ain't_Over, had a keyboard failure in the middle of ripping & forgot to change the name before uploading the files. enjoy.
