http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Snare_drum

Quote

The snare drum is a drum with strands of snares made of curled metal wire, metal cable, plastic cable, or gut cords stretched across the drumhead, typically the bottom. Pipe and tabor and some military snare drums often have a second set of snares on the bottom (internal) side of the top (batter) head to make a "brighter" sound, and the Brazilian caixa commonly has snares on the top of the upper drumhead. The snare drum is considered one of the most important drums of the drum kit.

Quote

When the top head is struck the snares vibrate against the bottom head producing a cracking sound. The snares can often be thrown off with a lever on the strainer so that the drum only produces a sound reminiscent of a tom-tom.

LOL!

I was wondering...

Yeah, if that's a snare, there is a bunch of metal wires on the inside, laying across the bottom. If it's a tom, there are no strands.

Do you see that knob-looking thing on the right? ...Above the wingnut? The wingnuts tighten the head. The level disables the snare. The snare is what you posted a pic of way back when.

I totally thought it was just a difference of drum head, like paper, plastic, or hide.

Didn't realize the snare was an actual snare looking thing.
Thanks Arch!

No problemo.

I learned when I got to take a snare drum apart to replace a broken snare back in marching band. Before that, I thought the same thing. ...That it was a difference in head material. I would imagine that you could hook a snare up to a djembe or something and get a snare-esque effect.

And now my son has a pint-sized drum set (Real drums, not Fisher-Price), and I turn the snare on and off to mess with him.

You are right, though... You can tighten and loosen the snare for different effects.

Apparently that disco snare was made by putting a wallet full of change on the snare.

Really.

I think that he sampled a marching band/drum corps.

I am actually looking for this kind of sample- does anyone have something like this or can link where I might be able to get it?
